Finally all the major economies and industrialized nations are agreed upon one fact.  Yes.  The global economy is on recession.  Fewer and fewer demands for the goods.  Credit squeeze.  Large lay-offs resulting increased unemployment.

Does this all means everything is going to come to an end?   Of course not.  Things will change.  But the big question is how can we overcome this?  How do we successfully handle this?  There are two ways to react to this.  One – take a panic action, two – a calculated future oriented action.  If you look back into the history, this is not the first time world is facing an economic recession.  It had happened many times, with many different magnitudes.  

Like any other industry, IT industry is also facing the heat of the Economic recession.  Most of the other major industries are enjoying the advantage of automation.  But, in sharp contrast, even today, the automation in software development area is very minimal.  Even in the highest industrialized economies the scenario is not different with respect to the software development.  The existing automation in software industry is a far cry as compared to the sophisticated automations available in the manufacturing industries.

The challenge now is to improve productivity as well as predictability.  This can happen only with automation.  As explained in the classical work “Mythical Man-Month” by Frederick P. Brooks      adding people to a project will not ensure speedy results, rather it will affect it adversely. So, what could be the calculated future oriented action?   This is the right time we need to think about automation of various parts of software development life cycle activities.  In my opinion, we will not have a better time than today, during the recession, to think about automation.  Take charge of the situation by implementing some automation solutions for the software development activities.  This will not only reduce the chaos, but will bring long term, sustainable productivity enhancement too!

We, Astra Infotech, would like to contribute our part to the software development community.  We would like to spread the awareness of automation as well as would like to expose you the benefits of various software engineering automation tools.  Astra Infotech would like to launch our "Software Engineering Automation Thursday!" seminar series from January 2009.  This will open up the possibilities of automation of various parts of software development life cycle.   What we intent with this seminar series is to create the awareness of software engineering automation and tools.
